Today, 22 April 2013, is EARTHDAY. According to today's Guardian "Earth Day, born in the US in 1970, was the creation in large part of Gaylord Nelson, a US senator and Democrat, who died in 2005.

We know that we are going to recocile ourselves to the fact that fracking is going to take place in the Karoo. The economic benefits of extracting shale gas far outweigh the cost to the environment according to the powers that be. Get used to the idea.

WORLD WATER DAY

World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. On the occasion of World Water Day on 22 March, celebrations and events took place worldwide. People all around the world took action to raise awareness on water issues and improve the management of our water resources.

 It is old news that one billion people in the world have no adequate access to clean water...the picture alongside graphically illustrates what one in seven people have to contend with.

This is the recycling symbol of Polyethylene Terephthalate which is usually abbreviated PET or PETE...you should find it on beverage containers. PET is commonly used for beverage, food and other liquid containers and can be recycled. It is a popular choice for packaging as it is inexpensive, lightweight, transparent, resealable, shatter-resistant and recyclable.

 Water usage has been growing at an alarming rate...at more than twice the rate the population increased during the past century, according to Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and UN-Water. Freshwater withdrawals have tripled over the last 50 years.

“Fracking” is a dirty word…or it is if you are a tree hugger and not a shareholder in the company exploring for or extracting hydrocarbons. But there is a group of people who are only concerned with researching the microbes living in shale deposits  with the hope of learning how these microbes metabolise fracking fluids. One such research group at Ohio State University is hoping to develop a computer model which can predict fluid movement from shale formations to groundwater aquifers.
